Painting Various Subjects

Another artist at a recent show said in order to be successful in art you have to focus on one thing…subject matter, style, size and framing.  I wonder if this is true.  It seems many artist do focus on one area but many do not.  I would be curious to know how people feel about this.  Artists, galleries and collectors i am sure will have varying points of view.  I would love to hear them.
